The published word within the English discipline has allowed literature to become a vehicle for teaching comprehension, analysis, and interpretation as a way for students to create their values and their understanding of society.

Well done, Katie. You clearly understood and fulfilled well the requirements for this interactivity. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteKatie,
ReplyDeleteYour image was a nice choice. I was intrigued as to why the titles on the books were in another language. Is it to infer that students reading various types of books provides education not only about our society today but societies that are vastly different? Either way, it does spark an interesting look into how reading has been multifaceted for students that are both native learners as well as English Language Learners. I like how you phrase the written word being published functions as a "vehicle" to aid in literacy, comprehension, and analysis of our society as a whole. This vehicle is a never ending way for educators to continually assess their students and gather information about the context they envision while they are reading.
Katie,
DeleteAt first glance of your image, I thought to myself..."Oh, how nice". When I read the quote that went along with it, I wasn't too sure about how I felt anymore. The idea that children get most of their knowledge about the society they live in from books is quite depressing. We let media control our thoughts and views of the world we live in. When I come to think of it, most of our stereotypes and generalizations come from what we read and what we see on tv. How can we have students experience these events in life and create their own feelings about them?
But to look more optimistically at your image, as I did initially, reading is important especially at the elementary school level. This is the age that most of the language and knowledge is acquired. Reading helps for students to understand and develop their language and literacy skills. I believe it is important to expose all kinds of books to children so that they don't create biases in their acquisition of language and knowledge.
